Kaufman appointed chief operating officer for The Motorists Insurance Group
COLUMBUS, Ohio (May 5, 2011) – The Motorists Insurance Group Chairman, President and CEO John J. Bishop, CPCU, CLU, announced during the company’s annual policyholder meeting that Motorists Executive Vice President David L. Kaufman, ACAS, MAAA, has been appointed chief operating officer by the company’s board of directors.
"This prudent action is part of the long-range succession plan for our leadership team and has been contemplated for some time," Bishop said. "Dave has provided outstanding guidance and vision since being named executive vice president.
"Motorists prides itself on developing leaders from within the organization who are committed to the core principles that make a difference for our policyholders and independent agents,” he added. "One of the blessings of being a mutual company is that we can execute long-range plans such as this, and those who place their trust and loyalty in us benefit from that stability.”
Kaufman joined Motorists in 1986 and has served as actuarial manager and vice president, vice president of commercial lines, vice president of information technology and chief information officer. He also previously served as senior vice president and chief financial officer at American Hardware Mutual Insurance Co., an affiliate of The Motorists Insurance Group.
He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with bachelor’s degrees in mathematics and economics.
Kaufman also serves as a member of the boards of directors for Motorists Mutual, Motorists Life, Iowa Mutual, Wilson Mutual and American Hardware Mutual. He is expected to be elected to the board of directors for Phenix Mutual at the company’s next policyholder meeting.
All group operations will be consolidated under Kaufman, who will also retain his title of executive vice president. Now reporting directly to Kaufman will be Senior Vice President and Secretary Susan Haack, who also was recently named chief risk officer; and Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer Michael Wiseman.
Chuck Wickert, senior vice president, Life Operations and Corporate Services; Grady Campbell, senior vice president, Marketing Services and Personal Lines; Charles Stapleton, senior vice president, Commercial Lines and Affiliate Operations; and John Kessler, chief information officer and vice president, Information Technology, will continue to report to Kaufman.
“As we move forward, we will continue to strive to forge strong relationships with independent agents who represent Motorists,” Kaufman said. “The ties we build with agents, policyholders and their communities are the cornerstone of our success and define our organizational philosophy.”
